Animal cruelty, Assange, psychiatry, and assisted dying

“Assisted dying worth debating ... it should be expanded to those individuals who are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and related disorders. In cases such as these, I believe, the decision should fall upon the primary caregiver.”

Between the Lines

This was a guest opinion by Marshall Jackson whose wife endured Alzheimer’s for almost four years before she died. The argument is always about the suffering, but one wonders if it is the caregiver or the patient who suffers the most.

I recall my own mother, who died after decades with multiple sclerosis. In the end, she could only move her eyelids. Finally, she lost the ability to swallow. But with her dying breath, she whispered that she wanted to live. She loved life and her family.

It is hard to understand such a strong will to live, but we know because she expressed it. It was hard watching her; harder for us, apparently, than for her.

Certainly, some caregivers have no desire to continue caring for a loved one, and would, in an instant, want to end a life much sooner than one who has the patience of a saint. Such was my father, who took care of our mother for all those years.

As the cost of medical treatment continues to rise, the temptation is to allow assisted dying, but it has its inherent dangers.

“... some of the fast food chains and grocery stores you buy food from may be selling you meat that comes from the deliberately cruel and brutal slaughter of animals sacrificed by Muslims to honor Allah!”

Between the Lines

There are a couple of things about this message that are bothersome. I am not as bothered by this “deliberately cruel” slaughter of animals as I am about the deliberately cruel dismemberment of babies in a late-term abortion. That does anger me.

I am not as sickened about the animals sacrificed in the name of Allah, as I am by the thousands of Christians sacrificed in his name. Just over the weekend, there were 100 decapitated bodies discovered in a mass grave just south of Mosul. The continued slaughter of Christians is savage. And it is ignored.

“... The campaign and Hillary’s supporters in the media have never claimed that any emails or documents released so far by WikiLeaks have been fake. ...”

Between the Lines

Until now. The weekend before the election, the Clinton camp released a “just in case” statement that if there is anything major released in the last days of the election, it would not be true. Just covering their backsides, but it makes one wonder -- what else might be out there?

“A high school student was ordered by a New Jersey high school to undergo a psychiatric evaluation ... .”

Between the Lines

The student had a project that had been assigned and approved the prior semester. He was given an “A” on the project. Because someone else believes differently, the student was ordered to be psychoanalyzed? Critical thinking used to be taught in school. Now it is forbidden.
