Birds are no match for Bears in district games

LA VERNIA -- With big wins over both the Pleasanton Eagles and Cuero Gobblers, the La Vernia Bears improved their standing in District 28-3A, and continue to make a strong march toward the postseason.

La Vernia hosted the Eagles last Tuesday night, and wasted little effort in putting the visiting team away. The Bears thundered out to a 13-4 lead after the first period of play, and walked into halftime with a comfortable 28-10 advantage.

After the break, the Bears continued to put pressure on the Eagles and outpaced the visiting team 10-7 through the third stanza. The Eagles finally got their break and turned up the heat in the fourth period to score 21 points, but the Bears never panicked, posted 19 points of their own, and ended the evening with a 57-38 victory.

La Vernia went on the road last Friday, traveling to Cuero to face the Gobblers on their own floor. The home-court advantage ended up meaning little to nothing to Cuero, however, as the Bears routed their district opponent and returned home with a 40-21 win.

The Bears applied pressure from the opening tipoff of the game, and dominated the Gobblers at both ends of the floor. While La Vernia dropped in a total of 14 first-quarter points, the Gobblers were held to just a single free throw, and went into the second period with a lot of ground to make up.

Things improved slightly for Cuero in the second, but La Vernia kept enough heat on the Gobblers to maintain a solid halftime lead of 19-9.

Following the break, the Bears returned to the floor and put in another strong defensive showing, holding Cuero to just 2 points through eight minutes of play. La Vernia added another 10 points of its own, and breezed into the final frame with a 29-11 lead.

The Gobblers went on to have their best scoring quarter of the game with 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to get past the Bears, as they added another 11 to the scoreboard and returned home with an impressive 40-21 win.

The win put La Vernia at 14-8 on the season, and bumped the team to 5-1 in district play. The Bears were scheduled to play at home Jan. 24 against Poteet, and will be in Yoakum this Friday, Jan. 27.
