The La Vernia boys basketball team hit the road Dec. 8-10 to take part in the Devine tournament, where they placed third in their bracket.
The Bears had a rough start, with a 60-47 loss to the Cole Cougars. Dylan Forde led the team with 10 points. CJ Ott and Brock Roberts scored 8 points each, with Dillon Bellino heading up the defense with eight rebounds and three steals.
La Vernia didn’t come to lose, however, and followed up with a close 50-48 win against the Medina Valley Panthers. Derek Miller led the offense with 16 points; Major Muenster, 14; and Bellino, 10. Bellino again led the defense, with seven rebounds and five steals, while Forde and Miller each got four rebounds.
On day two, the Bears started with an easy 80-47 win over the Fox Tech Buffaloes. Miller racked up an impressive 19 points, with Muenster adding 13 points, 9 of them from treys. Forde helped with six assists, and Miller had eight rebounds.
Later in the day, La Vernia took on the Devine Warhorses, helping themselves to a 54-32 victory from their hosts. Miller and Muenster led the team with 13 points and six rebounds. Muenster added 11 points to the cause, along with six assists, while Bellino stole four balls.
The Bears took on Cole again on the last day of the tournament, falling to the Cougars, 62-57. Miller led La Vernia again on points, scoring 15, with another 13 points from Kyle Moczygemba, who caught fire with four 3-pointers. Miller secured 12 rebounds for his team, with Forde getting five and Moczygemba getting four. Muenster led with four assists and four steals.
