“We’re switching direction with our athletics program,” Dr. Josť Moreno told the La Vernia News, responding to community comments regarding La Vernia Independent School District sports and the athletics staff.
Assistant Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Scott Grubb has not been fired, La Vernia ISD Superintendent Moreno adamantly stated.
“He was offered a different administrative position,” Moreno said. Grubb has stepped away to consider options, which may include retirement, the superintendent said.
Grubb was named interim head football coach last May, when former Boys Athletic Director Brandon Layne left for Ferris ISD. Grubb took over from Jim Blackburn as the Bears’ head basketball coach in 2013; at that time, he’d been with La Vernia ISD for 24 years.
“He’s an incredible man and a great role model for our kids,” Moreno said.
The district is heading in a completely different direction, he continued.
The district has posted the position and will begin interviewing in January, Moreno added.
Grubb told the La Vernia News he is taking time with his family to prayerfully consider his next step, and expressed his thanks to community members for their support.
