Promotions spark friendly Christmas competition in La Vernia
LA VERNIA MDD La Vernia city Councilman and municipal development district board member Jennifer Moczygemba (right) presents the first-place prize in the city’s wreath-decorating contest to representatives of the La Vernia Country Store.

Shoppers and visitors to La Vernia have been enjoying the beautiful Christmas decorations and festive atmosphere around the city.

“We were so pleased with the entries for the wreath-decorating contest,” said Billie Cantu, with the La Vernia Municipal Development District (MDD). “Every year, the participants make it harder and harder on our judges.”

A total of 14 businesses participated in the La Vernia MDD’s contest, doing their part to get La Vernia ready for Christmas with their beautifully decorated holiday wreaths.

They went all out to make their wreaths unique, Cantu said, and the judges were torn, with so many great entries. Judging took place Dec. 3. Winners of the best wreath titles and cash prizes are:

¢First place, La Vernia Country Store, $100

¢Second place, La Vernia Heritage Museum, $50

¢Third place, The Den, $25.

Winter Wassailing, another promotion by the La Vernia MDD, also had participating La Vernia businesses getting creative and stepping up their recipes. Many patrons came out to shop and play Dec. 3 in La Vernia and enjoyed hot spiced wassail. And we had the weather to enjoy “a nice treat to help warm the bones and keep you going on such a cold, wet day,” Cantu said.

In conjunction with Winter Wassailing, the city promoted seasonal shopping with “Passport to La Vernia,” which was very successful, according to Cantu. Folks shopping at participating businesses were entered into prize drawings. Prizes were awarded of $200, $100, and $50 gift certificates to the participating vendor of the winner’s choice, along with nine donated vendor prizes.

For simply shopping locally, 13 shoppers won great prizes.

The La Vernia MDD thanks everyone who participated. Watch for these programs to return next year!
