Madonna, news media, and protests

“Madonna: F-bombs, blowing up the White House and the Secret Service”

Between the Lines

The aging Madonna got some much-needed attention at the women’s march in Washington. The march was portrayed as “anti-Trump” but a lot of the women appeared to be out there just to get attention. Marching and “protesting” made them feel good.

It was ironic, though, that the X-rated performances by Madonna, Ashley Judd, and others were met with cheers from the very women who, a few weeks ago, were so offended by Donald Trump’s language from a decade ago.

“Donald Trump halts hiring of federal workers and freezes pay raises. ... Trump said the freeze excludes the U.S. military.”

Between the Lines

Following on the heels of the Brexit vote and Trump’s new pledge to cut growth in the federal government, perhaps now is the time for Wilson County to follow the trend: No more automatic pay raises for county employees and officials.

“Mike Pence: 20% of Taxpayer Funding for Trump Transition Will Go Back to US Treasury”

Between the Lines

Now that should have been the headline with the so-called mainstream media! When was the last time you heard of any agency giving money back to the treasury, but I did not see the big headlines.

“Media must stand together in Trump’s anti-media era”

Between the Lines

Journalists have never been treated this way. Instead, they are used to deciding what is news and what is not.

Perhaps if the media, including most journalists, had been fair during the campaign, it would not have come to this. Unbelievably, they still have not learned, as the president boldly pointed to several recent stories that were untrue. As the news media continue to huddle in fear, the White House stands firm in its release of information directly to the people, bypassing the news media. They are doing it to themselves.

“As a new President is inaugurated in Washington, DC, we wanted to share this article on the religious heritage of inaugurations. Our nation’s history is full of examples of expressions of faith in public life ... !”

Perhaps Americans can once again enjoy saying “Merry Christmas” without looking over their shoulders!

“NAIROBI -- Senegal announced that its troops entered neighboring Gambia on Thursday to force its longtime ruler, Yahya Jammeh, to step down, part of a bold West African regional effort to defend a democratic election won by the opposition.”

Between the Lines

Seeing the vitriol expressed during some of the post-inaugural events, it makes one wonder how long it will be before we have to call out the troops to enforce peace and a safe transition of powers in Washington. It was sad testimony to see some of the violence during the inauguration and the vile language and demonstrations by some in the women’s marches.
