La Vernia taps Taber for top football slot

La Vernia taps Taber for top football slot
LA VERNIA ISD New La Vernia Head Football Coach Chris Taber is joined Jan. 26 by his wife, Kelly, and oldest daughter, Abigail, following a special meeting of the La Vernia Independent School District trustees. Taber currently is the boys athletic director at Chapel Hill ISD.

“I feel very blessed,” Chris Taber said Jan. 26, after the La Vernia Independent School District board of trustees approved his hire as the new La Vernia High School boys athletic director and head football coach. “God puts us where he does for a reason.”

Fort Worth native Taber, most recently the boys athletic director and offensive coordinator at Chapel Hill ISD, brings 15 years of coaching experience to La Vernia.

Joining him at the board meeting were his wife, Kelly, and oldest daughter, Abigail.

After thanking Dr. Josť Moreno, La Vernia superintendent, for the opportunity, he turned to Kelly.

“I want to thank my wife,” he said. “I wouldn’t be here without her,” adding that she knows the challenges of being a coach’s wife.

The two also have a 10-year-old son, Ty, and younger daughter, Bella, who’s 5.

Taber, who helped rebuild a struggling athletic program in the Jacksonville ISD, took the district’s varsity football team to bi-district finals, and athletes to playoffs in other sports, as well. His efforts at Chapel Hill helped the team to a 3A State football championship in 2011.

He’s bringing that experience and desire to build a solid program to La Vernia.

In an official statement, Taber shared his excitement about his new role and some goals he’s set as he begins.

“It excites me to work for a district that shares the same vision I have in accomplishing excellence,” he said. “Dr. Moreno and the La Vernia ISD have set a challenge to achieve the Lone Star Cup within the next three years. This challenge will be met with enthusiasm and determination from day one.”

Excellence in academics will also be key, he said.

“I’m looking forward to working with these kids,” Taber said last Thursday. “And we’re looking forward to being in this unbelievable community with good support!”

La Vernia’s football program has seen a series of head coaches since Bo Robinson resigned in May 2015.

He was followed by Brandon Layne, who left La Vernia last May after only a year at the helm. Taking the Bears into the fall 2016 season was Scott Grubb, formerly the district’s assistant basketball coach.

Despite the changing leadership, the Bears went into the 4A Division I playoffs last fall, and were undefeated district champs in the previous three seasons.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead and building a program based on Attitude, Effort, Discipline, and Selflessness,” Taber said.

La Vernia Girls Athletic Director Richard Hinojosa welcomed Taber’s hire.

“We are excited to have Coach Taber and his famly join our La Vernia family,” Hinojosa said. “He’s going to be a wonderful and productive addition.”
