60th annual La Vernia stock show, March 2-4
Ava Boren proves that this fourth-grader can handle her turkey entry prior to the March 4 show.

The 60th La Vernia Junior Livestock & Poultry Show begins Thursday, March 2, and continues through Saturday, March 4, at the La Vernia Chamber of Commerce grounds, located at 12301 U.S. 87 W. in La Vernia.

The judging of rabbits starts off the show Thursday at 5 p.m.

Friday’s activities start at 8 a.m. with the judging of turkeys and broilers. At 10 a.m., lambs take center stage, followed by the breeding ewes, goats, and breeding nannies.

Afternoon events include the steer show at 2 p.m. and the swine show at 6 p.m.

Baked foods, arts/crafts

If baked foods or arts and crafts are your thing, then La Vernia is the place to be. Judging of arts and crafts projects will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Sweets entries will be judged at 11 a.m., including iced or uniced cakes, drop or bar cookies, pies, and yeast or quick breads.

The baked foods show and arts and crafts auction is set for 4 p.m.

Auction

The finale -- the livestock and poultry auction -- is set for Saturday at noon.

Add-on sheets will be available Saturday in the hospitality building and buyers’ pool booth starting at 10 a.m.

As in past years, buyers’ pool and auction sales committee members are working to ensure that all exhibitors are given a fair and equitable price for their projects. Anyone wishing to make a donation to the buyers’ pool may visit the booth at the show.

For more information, contact Mark Koepp at 210-288-9889 or Sarah Young at 210-259-9886 or sandryoung123@gmail.com.

A silent auction also will be held, with all proceeds to benefit senior scholarships.

Vendors will be on hand with assorted food, beverages, and arts and crafts booths. For more information, contact Charity at 830-534-9241.

Activities conclude with a dance Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., with music by “Waitin’ On Hayden.”
