On a night that would seal the deal for the Bears, who were hoping to make it back to District 29-4A champions for the second year in a row, Saul De La Torre came in at the right time March 3 and helped La Vernia win it 2-1 on Pleasanton soil.
De La Torre’s direct kick from about 40 yards out hit the top inside corner and tied it up with seconds left in the first half. He later played forward to help alleviate pressure on Pedro Carranza, who scored on a direct kick assist from Devin Goddard to make it 2-1.
This win secured them first place in the district, and this game, like all of them this season, was dedicated to the late Miguel De La Torre.
The Bears played Somerset March 7 at home for the final game of the regular season.
