The La Vernia Bear baseball team traveled to Devine March 16 for a heartbreaking game against the Warhorses, rallying twice before ultimately losing in the last inning, 5-4.
Neither team could make it on base in the first inning. Bears Keegan Holm and Clayton Chadwick singled in the second inning, but some strong Devine pitching put an end to their plans. La Vernia pitcher Tyler Rodriguez responded with a strikeout of his own, and two quick ground outs closed the inning.
The first runs of the evening came from Devine off of two doubles in the third. The Bears weren’t having it. Holm reached first on an error, before Chadwick and Ryan Pugh singled to fill the bases. Easton Parrish’s sacrifice bunt scored Holm and got him to first on an error. Rodriguez then scored Chadwick, and John Hernandez scored Pugh to put La Vernia up 3-2.
Devine put two more runs on the board at the bottom of the fifth inning, however, to put them ahead again at 4-3.
The Bears mounted a response in the seventh, after a single by Nathan Beyer. Michael Churchman sacrificed to the pitcher, before Garrett Spencer scored Beyer from second base with a ground ball to the right outfield to tie the score at 4-4.
The Warhorses had the final say, though, sending a home run over the fence to bring the final score to 5-4.
This loss drops La Vernia’s overall record to 6-7-1. The team will begin their district run March 24 with an away game against the Gonzales Apaches.
