Government freebies, terrorist attackers, La Vernia healing

Headline from

Sen. Cornyn’s office

“Bipartisan legislation would promote volunteerism within meal delivery program, providing meals to seniors across America.”

Between the Lines

It is good to promote volunteerism, of course, but how is it that the federal government always has to be at the center of everything benevolent? The question, of course, is facetious.

The focus on Meals on Wheels has increased exponentially since it showed up on the cutting end of President Trump’s proposed budget. Suddenly the elderly would starve without the government bringing them lunches, just as kids would starve without school breakfasts, lunches, and after-school programs. It is little wonder that families are becoming irrelevant.

The intentions are good, of course, but I’m all for cuts to the federal feel-good programs. Let the churches step up to the plate and earn their tax-exempt status. To the extent that families and churches are becoming irrelevant, they have done it to themselves by turning over what used to be a basic of Christianity to the federal government. It used to be the churches that would “feed the hungry.” Now they just turn to the government to visit the sick, elderly, disabled, frail, or at-risk. To be fair, Sen. Cornyn’s bill would increase the mileage deduction for volunteers to deliver meals. Presumably, church members would also be volunteering?

WashingtonPost.com

“London attacker was British-born and had been previously investigated by authorities, prime minister says.”

Between the Lines

The attacker had been “previously investigated.” That sounds familiar, does it not? That is the same thing that we have heard about so many of the American attackers. They were being watched, had been investigated and were released by authorities. This was the case with the Boston bombers, San Bernadino killers, and the Orlando nightclub shooter, to name a few. One might ask why we have the CIA and FBI if they practice “catch and release.”

With all the surveillance our government is doing on its citizens, you would think they could stop more of them. Possibly they are focusing too much on political investigations rather than terrorism.

“Veteran newsman Ted Koppel told Fox News host Sean Hannity that he is ’bad for America’ in an interview that aired on CBS é .”

Between the Lines

Hannity, who makes no pretense about where he stands when he reports the news, said he sat for a 50-minute good-faith interview with Koppel. When Koppel boiled it down to 70 seconds, it did not make Hannity look good. While Koppel passes himself off as a veteran journalist, one wonders which one really produces the “fake news?”

Wilson County News

“The La Vernia community is in shock following nine arrests, including at least seven student athletes é .”

Between the Lines

This is sad news from all perspectives. Every abuser, as well as every victim, and every other student athlete or not and their families, are suffering through this. We are a small community and it affects us all. As the investigations continue, we pray that healing may come for all involved.

We are all involved.
