Lady Bears are Bi-district champs!

Lady Bears are Bi-district champs!
Members of the La Vernia Lady Bear soccer team head onto the field in Floresville before their March 24 Bi-district playoff match against the Beeville Lady Trojans. The Lady Bears won the game, 1-0.

The La Vernia Lady Bear soccer team had their hands full during a March 24 Bi-district match against Beeville in Floresville, but ultimately rallied for a 1-0 win against the Lady Trojans.

A strong Beeville offense took the fight to La Vernia early on, keeping Lady Bear goalie Sarah Wildenstein on her toes.

Riley Jaskinia got off La Vernia’s first shot on goal from 10 yards out, as the offense began to warm up and spend more time in the Lady Trojans’ half. Macensey Clark, Natalie Hernandez, and Daniela Ayon had several attacks, with Cheyenne Brizzee coordinating from the middle.

Crisp passing from Beeville continued to cause headaches for La Vernia, however, despite some good defending from Brizzee and Kassie Bauer, and the outcome was anyone’s guess by the end of the half.

Clark started things off with a bang in the second half, when she almost put one in from the corner kick area. Ayon had several more attacks, but the Lady Trojan goalie had begun to come farther out of the goal to neutralize her speed.

Ayon wasn’t to be thwarted, however. She stole the ball at midfield and dribbled up the right, where she was confronted by two defenders. Then Hernandez arrived on the scene and took it the rest of the way, sending the ball just right of the goalie to bring the score to 1-0.

Beeville was quick to retaliate and continued to penetrate La Vernia’s defense, taking advantage of but never capitalizing on some occasional loose marking. Wildenstein held her ground in the goal for any shots that were on target.

The Lady Trojans were out of breath by this point. Ayon and Hernandez continued their own attacks. Jaskinia caught fire in the final 10 minutes, leading the charge up the field several times, while Josilyn Mendoza had a good showing in defense during the final minutes of the game. Clark got off one final shot, and the Lady Bears took the Bi-district championship.

La Vernia (9-7-2, 2-3-1) will play their Area match against Hidalgo March 31 at Calallen High School. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.
