Bears maul Giddings

The La Vernia Bear baseball team won its April 7 non-district away game against the Region III Giddings Buffaloes, 12-4.

Nathan Beyer got things going for the Bears with a double off a line drive. He was followed by Erik Ruiz and Corey Rackler, who sacrificed to score Beyer but still reached first on an error. Ruiz stole third then scored on an error, while Hunter Homeyer scored Rackler, bringing the score to 3-0.

The Buffaloes scored on an error after tagging up in the bottom of the inning, while pitcher Tyler Rodriguez struck out their other two batters.

La Vernia put 4 runs on the board off a Giddings error and singles by Rackler and Clayton Chadwick in the second inning, widening the gap to 7-1.

Both teams were having trouble getting on bases for the next few innings, until Rackler broke the spell in the sixth with a homerun. Homeyer advanced to third on a wild pitch and then continued home on a balk, to bring the score to 10-1.

The Buffaloes responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Bears immediately canceled these out, starting with singles from Beyer, Ruiz, and Homeyer. Hernandez then hit a grounder to first base that was mishandled, allowing Beyer and Ruiz to score. Giddings scored once more in the last inning, to end the game 12-4.

La Vernia (9-8-1, 3-1) returned to district play with an April 11 away game against Wimberley, and will take on Gonzales April 13 at home.
