The La Vernia Lady Bears came back with a vengeance from an early deficit against the Gonzales Lady Apaches April 13, holding their lead for an 8-6 victory.
The Lady Apaches pulled ahead in the first inning with 2 runs. Then in the bottom of the second, the Lady Bears rallied their offense for 6 runs.
The inning began with singles from Shelby Rodriguez, McKenzie Duke, and Lily Janek to load the bases. Rodriguez and Duke scored off a mishandled fly ball by Addison Dennis, then Janek scored on a fielder’s choice off a grounder by Marisa Hernandez. Madison Blount singled to score Dennis. Shianne Bean brought in Hernandez to bring the score to 6-2, La Vernia.
Blount doubled in the third inning to score Hernandez, but the Lady Apaches got 2 runs in the fourth to shorten the gap to 7-4. Rodriguez responded with a home run in the next inning. It was anybody’s game when the Lady Apaches sent a homer over the fence to score 2 runs in the last inning, but the Lady Bears held their 8-6 lead to take the game.
La Vernia (22-4, 4-2) played Eastside Memorial April 18, and will host Navarro April 21 for their last district game.
