Bears drop Central Catholic, finish third in district
La Vernia Bear Clayton Chadwick crosses home plate April 25 against Central Catholic.

The Central Catholic Buttons met the La Vernia Bears baseball team on April 25, with the Bears taking the game, 4-0.

Both teams brought out their hard-throwing arms to the mound. For the hometown Bears, Garrett Spencer took over pitching duties. Although both teams were able to get men on base during the first three innings, neither team crossed the plate.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, La Vernia’s Ryan Sczech ...got on base via a base-on-balls. Next up was Erik Ruiz, who sent a ball hooking down past first base for a double. Clayton Chadwick sent a hard line drive out to left center field to score Sczech and Ruiz.... ...

Chadwick took over the mound during the fourth inning. Two quick strikeouts and a soft popup back to the pitcher brought the ...fifth inning to a close.

The Buttons couldn’t do much during their at-bat in the sixth, and they were sent back out to the field.

The bottom of the sixth inning began with a free pass to first via a walk for Corey Rackler. Following him was Chadwick, who sent a long fly ball that the right fielder couldn’t catch up to, turning it into a double, and sending the front runner home. Chadwick scored after a passed ball and a fielder’s choice, and the Bears now had a 4-0 lead.

The Buttons ended the game by hitting three slow ground balls to the infield.

La Vernia (12-11-1, 5-4) fell to Wimberley for its final district game of the season, 4-2, finishing third in District 27-4A.

The Bears will take on Fredericksburg May 5 at 7 p.m. for the Bi-district championship.
