Showers of amazing grace

The label across the quart-sized bottle proclaimed the contents: Amazing Grace.

It definitely caught my attention amongst the varied items in the yard sale I’d stopped at, and I took a closer look. The bottle contained shower gel.

Hmmm ... I could bathe in amazing grace! What a concept!

I bought it -- as much for the fact it was one of my favorite fragrances by a well-known beauty brand at a yard-sale price, as the intriguing thought of showering in grace.

But that’s what we do, each and every day.

Our Lord, whose love is immeasurable, incomparable, all-knowing, and yet all-forgiving, showers us with His grace daily.

Each day, whether we believe and trust in Him or not, whether we’ve been good or not, whether we acknowledge it or not, He sends His showers of abundance raining down into each life.

“... for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).

His mercy washes away the deepest, darkest stain of sin.

His grace gives us strength to cope with anything that comes our way.

And His love conquers all -- the hardest of hearts, the loneliest path, the darkest night, the depths of despair. He opened His arms wide on the cross -- and embraced us in our sinfulness, throwing wide the gates to eternity and inviting us to follow Him in.

We may be weak. We may be sinful. We may fall time and time again. But, as St. Paul reminds us, it is in our weakness that He grants us such grace as to overcome all our sin, all our failings. He gives us strength. In Him, we are made whole.

“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me” (2 Cor. 12:9).

Yes, we shower in Amazing Grace.
