Family raises funds for murder victim’s funeral

Family members have begun a GoFundMe account online to raise funds to meet funeral expenses for Alexander Clay Byrom, 25, who was shot and killed May 5 at a residence on C.R. 356 near La Vernia.

According to the fundraiser page, he was “an amazing father, brother, nephew, friend, and husband ... a good soul.”

A visitation and celebration of his life are set for Saturday, May 20, from 3-6 p.m. with Meadowlawn Funeral Home in San Antonio. “... bring your guitar for one last jam session with Clay!” the GoFundMe page states.

Family members are hoping to raise enough to meet the costs, and to have a little to set aside for his daughters as a trust fund. He did not have any insurance.

According to information from Wilson County Sheriff Joe D. Tackitt Jr., Byrom’s death was the result of a disagreement between him and his half-brother, 23-year-old David Greenwood last Friday evening.

Deputies responded to a disturbance call with shots fired around 5 p.m., to discover Byrom dead. Greenwood had fled the scene, Tackitt said.

Information provided to officers indicates that Greenwood, 23, was arguing with a young woman. Byrom tried to stop the argument, which led to an altercation between the two brothers. Greenwood allegedly shot and killed Byrom outside the home on the property, where both lived; the younger man and female then fled.

They were arrested later that night in Blanco County.

Greenwood now faces capital murder charges, the sheriff said.
