Time to be refreshed

One day this past week I realized that I could no longer rely on the weatherman who kept forecasting rain. I had to turn on some sprinklers -- the grass was fading fast. I chose the areas that looked the worst but had the best grass to water first.

About 30 minutes after I had started the sprinklers I noticed how much greener those areas looked, mostly because the dust had been rinsed off -- it was definitely refreshing for the yard. Then I noticed the grass wasn’t the only thing enjoying the water; there were birds on the ground and some flying through the spray that really seemed to be enjoying themselves. One hummingbird kept flying through the finest part of the spray, while a cardinal would land on the sprinkler frame, then get down in the wet grass and ruffle its feathers to make the grass shed the water. I felt sure if the birds were laughing, I was almost hearing them. You know the sound kids make when they play in a sprinkler? That’s what I thought I should be hearing.

Sometimes in this life we may experience times of drought -- nothing seems to work right for us and often our very hope will begin to dry up. We may seek advice from others who seem to be going through a similar season. We try everything in our power to turn things around. Perhaps it is unintentional sin causing the problem, or perhaps the sin is relying only on ourselves to change the outcome. We need to be refreshed.

Acts 3:19 tells us to “Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord.” And Hosea 6:3 encourages us, “Let us acknowledge the Lord; let us press on to acknowledge him. As surely as the sun rises, he will appear; he will come to us like the winter rains, like the spring rains that water the earth.”

What a refreshing time that will be.

As our season begins to warm up I hope you are refreshed at His well. Drink deeply and often of His water. You may find that you want to play in the sprinkler. I’d love to hear your laughter.

Have a great week and give God the glory!
