Men only: New city council is all-male preserve

Men only: New city council is all-male preserve
NANNETTE KILBEY-SMITH Hands up! La Vernia Mayor Robert Gregory administers the oath of office May 11 to new city councilmen (from left) Jay Hennette, Martin Poore, and Mark Doege.

For the first time in many years, the La Vernia City Council is a men-only entity.

Mayor Robert Gregory noted the difference, as two new city councilmen and a returning member took the oath of office May 11.

Following approval of a canvass of the May 6 election returns, Martin Poore, Jay Hennette, and Mark Doege were sworn in as city councilmen. The three were unopposed in their election bids; they join Eloi Cormier and Harold Schott on the council.

Leaving service were Jennifer Moczygemba and Rhonda Watson, who both decided not to seek re-election. In addition to her city council membership, Moczygemba’s decade of service has included stints on the Planning & Zoning Commission and Municipal Development District board. Watson stepped in to fill the unexpired term of Councilman Marie Gerlich, who passed away in December 2015.

In other business, the council:

¢Approved an ordinance to amend the city’s sign ordinance, following a brief public hearing during which no one addressed the council on the proposal

¢Approved the resignation of La Vernia Municipal Development District board President Jennifer Moczygemba; Hennette expressed interest in filling the vacancy.

¢Approved an additional easement along Warren Street for development of a medical plaza

¢Heard from Mary Friesenhahn about a dog problem in her neighborhood

¢Discussed streets projects for fiscal year 2017; this will be revisited in the next meeting.

The council also discussed the need for members of the city’s appointed boards ...Planning & Zoning Commission, Municipal Development District, and Parks & Recreation Commission. Read more about this on page 1.
