NANNETTE KILBEY-SMITH Mayor Robert Gregory thanks outgoing city Councilman Jennifer Moczygemba May 11 for her service to the city. For a decade, she contributed in various capacities including service on the city’s Planning & Zoning Commission, city council, and Municipal Development District board. Volunteers for these boards and the city’s Parks & Recreation Commission are urgently needed.

The city of La Vernia invites implores members to serve the community’s needs.

“We’re looking for volunteers for our advisory council to the parks,” Mayor Robert Gregory said, addressing the city council and audience members May 11. “We’re desperately looking for volunteers in that capacity.”

In addition, the mayor said, there are vacancies on other city boards, and civic-minded people are needed to help the city council and city staff in advisory and decision-making capacities.

Residents of the city, and some who live in the half-mile extraterritorial jurisdiction, are invited to apply. The minimum age is 18. No special training or skills are required, just a desire to serve the greater good of the community, said City Administrator Yvonne Griffin.

The city of La Vernia’s boards include:

¢Planning & Zoning Commission: This decision-making board recommends to the council the creation and modification of zoning districts; reviews and approves plats for new building; cooperates with the Municipal Development District regarding city needs and development, and more; meets the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

¢Municipal Development District: A decision-making board that facilitates growth and development of existing companies and provides the foundation to recruit new business to the area by developing and implementing initiative programs; meets the second Thursday of the month at 5 p.m., or as needed.

¢Parks & Recreation Commission: Assists city staff with planning of parks and recreation maintenance, assists with city-planned events; this is an advisory board, with no fixed meeting date at this time.
