Speech team conquers State!
We are the champions! La Vernia High School speech and debate team members are elated, after earning the Conference 4A State Championship speech team title last week in Austin. La Vernia last garnered the State title in 2010. Congratulations!

The La Vernia High School speech team has captured the 2017 UIL 4A State championship!

Team members and coach Noah Recker brought home the State championship trophy last week, following competition May 22-23 in Austin.

Students competed at district and regional to earn slots in the State contest.

“La Vernia can enter three people in each event on a team,” Recker explained. Three individuals from district go to regionals, and only three individuals from regionals go to State.”

The La Vernia team has about 55 members, he said. Several students competed throughout the year, but did not get a place on a UIL team.

These students placed in the finals and earned the team the Conference 4A State Championship trophy:

¢Dillon Fuller, second, Lincoln-Douglas debate

¢James Kosub, second, Persuasive Speaking

¢Sean Elsik, fifth, Cross-Examination debate; fourth, Persuasive Speaking

¢David Garza, fifth, Cross-Examination

¢Tara Pieprzica, third, Poetry

¢Natalie Magdaleno, fourth, Prose

¢Danielle Maldonado, fifth, Informative Speaking.

All of the above are seniors, with the exception of James Kosub.

This is La Vernia High School’s second speech and debate State championship; the school previously earned this honor in 2010. During the past 10 years, the school has had 37 State medalists, according to Recker, and more than 50 State qualifiers.

La Vernia has a long history of participating in the speech and debate program. Recker has been the coach for the past decade.

“We hope to recruit more individuals into this beneficial activity in the future and are looking to be even more competitive nationally.”

Debate is UIL’s longest-running contest, according to; the contests date back to 1910. Ten teams representing 10 divisions of the state competed in that first State tournament. More than a century later, “the UIL Cross-Examination Policy Debate State Meet is celebrated as the largest high school debate tournament in the nation.”
