La Vernia ISD releases records

“All open records requests will now be released,” Dr. Josť Moreno told the La Vernia News July 18.

The La Vernia Independent School District superintendent was addressing a decision to withdraw the district’s appeal to the Texas Attorney General regarding requests for records under the Freedom of Information Act.

The district has received numerous requests for information in the ongoing investigation into alleged extreme hazing and sexual assaults in the La Vernia High School boys’ athletic program.

News of the allegations broke in March, and initial investigations were started by the La Vernia Police Department; the Texas Rangers later stepped in to continue the investigations. The district has also been conducting an internal investigation of its own regarding policies and procedures, among other things.

All information requested and deemed public is being released as directed by the Attorney General, Moreno said Tuesday.

La Vernia ISD “... strongly believes in transparency but also has a responsibility to protect information that is not public,” the superintendent said.

The standard appeal was filed July 13, keeping the district within the 10-day deadline to respond to a request for information, before a scheduled July 17 meeting of district trustees.

After the meeting, Moreno directed the district’s legal counsel not to proceed with the appeal; the district’s appeal to the Texas Attorney General’s decision to release information was withdrawn as of July 18.
