Tennis team takes home top prize from East Central
Members of the La Vernia High School varsity tennis team celebrate their first-place finish at the East Central Tennis Tournament last weekend.

EAST CENTRAL This past weekend, the La Vernia High School varsity tennis team competed at the East Central Tennis Tournament. The team had a great tournament, beating out five other teams and taking home first place.

The girls doubles team of Ali Beck and Julie Barnes took first place, defeating Highlands, 7-5, 6-2 in the quarterfinal round; Seguin, 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals round; and La Vernia’s second doubles team, 6-2, 6-1 in the finals. Paula Watson and Destiny Roath took second-place honors by defeating Sam Houston, 6-0, 7-5 in the quarterfinal round; Seguin, 7-6(7-2), 6-7(4-7), 10-8 in the semifinals; and then losing to La Vernia’s Beck and Barnes in the finals.

In boys doubles, Adam Poore and Nick Guitron took first place by defeating Brackenridge, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals; Seguin, 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals; and Brackenridge in the finals, 7-5, 6-3.

Sarah Ellis took first place in girls singles play by defeating Highlands, 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals; Brackenridge 6-0, 6-3 in the semifinals; and Brackenridge in the finals, 7-5, 6-0. Megan Amerson was defeated by Brackenridge 2-6, 1-6 in the semifinals, and East Central 3-8 in the consolation semifinals.

Levi Andrews made it to the finals in boys singles, and took second place by defeating East Central, 4-6, 6-0, 10-5 in the quarterfinals; and Brackenridge, 4-6, 6-0, 10-0 in the semifinals; before losing to Seguin, 1-6, 2-6 in the finals. Darius DuBose was defeated by East Central 2-6, 1-6 in the round of 16, and Highlands in the consolation semifinals, 5-8.

La Vernia also fared well in mixed doubles, with Alex Leytham and Chris DeLeon making it to the consolation finals. East Central defeated them 0-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals, but they came back to defeat Highlands 8-0 in the consolation semifinals, before losing to Seguin, 3-8, in the consolation finals. Preslie Pavlich and Jonathan Bitsis were defeated in the round of 16 by Brackenridge, 5-7, 6-7(1-7); and Seguin, 4-8, in the consolation quarterfinals.

The team will head to the John Newcombe Tennis Ranch next weekend to train, before competing in the SAISD No. 2 Tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 17-18 at McFarlin Tennis Center.
