Traffic lights coming to Centerpoint

Traffic lights coming to Centerpoint

A grass-roots petition for a traffic light at the intersection of F.M. 775 and F.M. 3432 will become a reality, and is an upcoming project with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

“Now the goal is to get this underway immediately and completed before the beginning of the 2017-18 school year,” said the petition’s creator, Jeannie Blankenship.

TxDOT’s forecasted start date of the project is 2020, however.

Traffic at the intersection has increased in the past few years, as development has continued. The intersection includes a Centerpoint station, several businesses, and Life Church, while nearby is La Vernia’s second fire station. Several newer subdivision entrances are around the intersection, as well.

Blankenship began collecting signatures in April, following her son’s minor accident there the second to occur within two hours. Almost 400 supporters have logged in to her petition at

She received an email from TxDOT in late June, saying that the project had been awarded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program. It will include a traffic signal, advance intersection warning signals and signs, safety lighting, and transverse rumble strips, according to the email.

There has already been some preliminary discussion concerning roadway improvements in the area, according to TxDOT Public Relations Officer Josh Donat. Such projects might allow the light installation to occur sooner, but the unusual alignment of the streets at the intersection creates its own issues.

“Before we can install the signal, we’ll need to address the alignment of the side streets, which means possible reconstruction of the intersection,” Donat said. “That would come at an additional cost and with more time than a simple stand-alone signal installation.”
