Lady Bears blast off to 11-0 record to start season
LV SPORTS BOOSTER CLUB The La Vernia Lady Bears volleyball team went 9-0 at the Aug. 10-12 Austin Invitational, bringing their overall record to 11-0.

This year’s varsity Lady Bears have gotten off to an impressive start this volleyball season with an 11-0 record after their first week back on the court.

Teamwork and communication are the golden concepts that Head Coach Theresa Reyes said she hopes to crystallize in her athletes. Now entering her 12th year at the helm, she’s established an impressive formula for success.

“It takes everybody to win,” she said. “Whatever position you’re in, you’ve got to be able to pull your weight.”

There were two injuries during La Vernia’s Aug. 9 games against Poteet and Sam Houston a dislocated thumb and a banged-up elbow. This didn’t stop the team from winning those matches, and going 9-0 at the Aug. 10-12 Austin Invitational, beating out Crockett, Molina, Kerrville-Tivy, East View, Lehman, Hutto, Copperas Cove, and Cedar Ridge to take first place.

“We’ll see; this is definitely a chance for growth,” Reyes said about the injuries.

The La Vernia team also will have to overcome the loss of graduate Kayla Homeyer, who is attending the University of the Incarnate Word. Besides the team’s injured middle position player, Coach Reyes pointed to outside Chloe Patton and libero Christa Reyes as the Lady Bears to watch out for this season.

“We’re trying a 5-1, 6-2 [formation] this year,” Coach Reyes said. “We really want to prepare for our District.”

She pointed to Navarro as being their main rival. La Vernia had a back-and-forth affair with them last year, dropping their first district match, winning the next, but ultimately falling to the Lady Panthers in the Regional final playoffs.

“They’re basically the ones we have to worry about, unless there are some sleepers somewhere, which you never know,” Reyes said.

The Lady Bears played Fredericksburg at home Aug. 15, and will head to Poth Aug. 17 for a game against the Pirettes.
