Lady Bears continue streak against Pirettes
DAN SHERRARD/ La Vernia’s Maddy Schroller gets ready for a serve against the Poth Pirettes Aug. 17. The Lady Bears won the match, 25-20, 25-13, and 25-22, bringing their overall record to 13-0.

The La Vernia Lady Bears traveled to Poth Aug. 17, winning against the Pirettes, 25-20, 25-13, and 25-22, to bring their overall record to 13-0.

The Lady Bears came in confident with their unblemished record, while the Pirettes were still smarting after two losses during their last four matches.

La Vernia Head Coach Theresa Reyes said she had three players recovering from previous injuries a sprained thumb, bumped knee, and a bruised arm but nothing too severe to keep anyone out.

La Vernia got the first serve of the match. As each team scored, the other side responded. La Vernia eventually got the game jitters out of the way, and started a rally. The first set ended at Lady Bears 25, Pirettes 20.

The second set looked like it might be a runaway, with La Vernia jumping out front to an 8-3 lead. Poth came back with a rally of its own, tying the game at 11-11, before going ahead by a couple of points. The Lady Bears got their act together, however, and shut them down, 25-13.

The Pirettes came out strong in the third set, but the Lady Bears stopped every rally and answered every point Poth scored. The final score was 25-22, La Vernia.

After the game, Coach Reyes said she had been nervous, because she had to put some players in different positions to cover for their injured teammates; she also was implementing a new defense.

La Vernia was set to face Boerne on Aug. 22, and will head to the Smithson Valley tournament Aug. 24-26, before taking on St. Joseph Aug. 29 in Victoria.
