Students reach out to help tempest-tossed Tivoli
Sponsors and members of the La Vernia ISD Student Councils and National Junior Honor Society stop for a smile and a snapshot, before the trip home from Tivoli.

The tiny Texas town of Tivoli took a huge hit from Hurricane Harvey in late August, but the community got a boost this past weekend, from students and community members in the La Vernia Independent School District (ISD).

Seeing the need of their fellow students in Tivoli, Student Council members at La Vernia High School and the junior high and intermediate campuses organized a drive to assist the storm-stricken community, southwest of Port Lavaca on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The high school community collected bottled water, baby wipes, batteries, work gloves, garbage bags, paper goods, and school supplies. The junior high collected paper goods, cleaning supplies, snack food items, beverages, and hygiene products. The intermediate campus invited donations of snack items, and the primary community collected paper goods.

Last Friday morning, Sept. 29, the Student Councils and National Junior Honor Society members loaded the donations into a trailer and the back of two SUVs and headed to Tivoli High School. La Vernia Sports Booster Club President Gary Gilbert drove the truck hauling the trailer.

The group headed to the Austwell-Tivoli Independent School District. Arriving midmorning, the La Vernia students -- with the aid of students from Tivoli -- unloaded the donated items.

Everyone enjoyed visiting over lunch, provided by Tivoli. Everyone one at Tivoli appreciated everything La Vernia ISD had done for them. It was a wonderful day.
