Bears close out regular season, look toward playoffs

LA VERNIA With just a game remaining in the regular season, the Bear varsity basketball team was sitting solidly in second place within the district. It’s a good place to be, with playoffs right around the corner.

Last week, the Bears picked up a pair of road wins after traveling to Gonzales and Pleasanton. La Vernia started with a 46-41 win over the Apaches in Gonzales, and then kept the Eagles grounded with a 45-31 win in Pleasanton.

The Bears were scheduled to face Cuero Feb. 14 in their final regular-season game of the year. From there, the team will catch a short break before entering the playoffs as the No. 2 seed out of District 28-3A.

Although the final games hadn’t been played as of press time, it appeared likely that the Bears would find themselves paired up with Carrizo Springs in the first round of the playoffs. The bi-district game will be played on Monday or Tuesday, Feb. 20 or 21, and the winner will advance to the area championship.

The Bears have proven they have what it takes to win this year, and it should be fun to watch La Vernia close out the regular season and move into the playoff arena.
