Come shop in La Vernia!

That’s the message from the La Vernia Municipal Development District (MDD), which approved several events this fall to encourage community members to spend money with local retailers, in the approach to the holidays.

During their Oct. 12 meeting, MDD Executive Director Yvonne Griffin outlined several events the group has sponsored in the past for President Cynthia Farmer and MDD members Eloi Cormier, Jay Hennette, and Mark Doege. All met with approval. These include:

• Small Business Saturday, Nov. 25; this will include boutiques and offer prizes, such as gift certificates, to participants

• Passport to La Vernia, Saturday, Dec. 2; the event includes retailers, restaurants, and more, and will include prize drawings for shoppers

• Winter Wassailing, Dec. 2; participating businesses and community groups will offer variations on “wassail” for visitors and shoppers to enjoy.

All the events encourage consumers to spend time and money in their hometowns. The Dec. 2 events will coincide with various community craft and gift shows that day, hosted by local churches and other organizations, and lead up to the “Spirit of Christmas” tree-lighting in the La Vernia City Park, Griffin said.

In other matters, the MDD board discussed a strategic plan for the city. Mayor Robert Gregory shared information about previous similar efforts, including a comprehensive plan that was prepared with the assistance of the Lower Colorado River Authority and a downtown district plan, created with the assistance of the University of Texas at San Antonio.

“It’s about serving the community,” Farmer said.

“People want to have businesses here so they don’t have to go to the Forum [in San Antonio] or elsewhere. What can we do for our families?”

Agreeing on the need to brainstorm, the members planned an Oct. 16 workshop to discuss the matter further.
