Finding our ‘fortunes’

We very much enjoy going to a Chinese restaurant and enjoying the food there. As we finish eating, we are given the bill and a fortune cookie.

We now have a couple of bites of the cookie and we read the fortune -- and do we believe it?

The first one opened did not have a fortune in it! What does that mean? Does that mean that we haven’t any good fortune coming?

And the second one that we opened said, “Stop waiting! Buy that ticket, take that special trip!” It didn’t suggest where to go on the trip, just buy the ticket now and get on with the trip.

How would you feel with these two cookies? Either we didn’t have any fortune, as the first cookie implied, or we should hurry and get a ticket and get on with a trip.

These are fun to read and think about, but what is the best choice for instructions and giving us our fortune?

How about we go to the Bible to look for our “fortune”?

What was the first scripture that you memorized? Was it John 3:16? Let’s look at this Scripture and see if we receive any mention of our “fortune.”

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”

How about that for a “fortune”?

“Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Also in John, we have the following, “I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life” (John 6:47).

And in John 6:35, we read the following, “Then Jesus declared, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.’”

What beautiful promises from our Lord and Savior -- and these are the most beautiful “fortunes.” Let’s turn to our Savior and Lord and follow Him always!

And how can we spread the word? Let’s make up some “fortune” Scriptures and spread them around. I call this “littering for the Lord” and I send Scriptures when I pay the bills. Just include a Scripture in the envelope; you never know who will open the bill and maybe it will make a difference in their lives. Also pray over the envelope before you mail it.

Let’s always seek God and His “fortune” and spread His glorious Word everywhere.
