The La Vernia Bears defeated the Beeville Jones Trojans 52-42 at last Friday night’s Homecoming game.

The Bear defense slipped up early to give up a 78-yard touchdown pass to the Trojans on the first play from scrimmage. However, Bear junior Brian Beltran kicked a 38-yard field goal and junior Clayton Chadwick rushed for a touchdown to give the Bears a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Beeville scored twice in the second quarter. La Vernia kept pace with Chadwick’s second rushing touchdown and a 40-yard touchdown run from junior Joseph Cortez. At the half, La Vernia led 24-21.

Chadwick opened up the second half with a 59-yard touchdown run on the Bears’ first play from scrimmage. On the ensuing Trojan possession, La Vernia junior John Michael Kadrmas intercepted a pass and returned it for a touchdown. The Trojans fumbled on the next possession, and junior Zach Scott recovered the ball. Chadwick ran for a fourth touchdown, and the Bears led 45-21.

“We won the turnover battle,” said La Vernia Head Coach Chris Taber. “There was a 21-point swing early in the third quarter that allowed us to pull away.”

Beeville made a change at quarterback that gave them a spark on offense and the Trojans finished out the third quarter with a touchdown and another touchdown to open the fourth, cutting the Bears’ lead to 45-35.

“We knew No. 8 was more of a runner, so we have to adjust the reads by our defenders.” Taber said.

Chadwick added a fifth rushing touchdown from 14 yards out. The Trojans scored one more time, but La Vernia senior Derrik Barnhardt recovered the Trojan onside kick attempt, and the Bears ran out the clock to secure the 52-42 win.

“This is a huge win,” Taber said. “Any time you knock off the team picked to win the district it gives you momentum. We are getting better, but we still have a long way to go. We have great kids, and they are learning every day.”

This week the Bears will take on the Pleasanton Eagles.

“They are a good football team,” the first-year coach said. “This game will put one of us out in front of the district all alone. We have to be at the top of our game.”

The Eagles are 7-0 and 2-0 in the district. The Bears are 4-3, but 2-0 in district play. The winner of next Friday night’s game will take the lead in District 15-4A.

La Vernia will travel to Pleasanton this Friday, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
