Lady Bears begin basketball season

The La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team started its scrimmage season Oct. 28 at Steele, followed by playing Fox Tech and Port Lavaca-Calhoun at home on Monday.

Last year, the Lady Bears surprised a lot of teams using an up-tempo, aggressive defense as a catalyst to scoring, and captured an undefeated district championship.

The 2017-18 team looks to continue that strategy. Despite losing all three starting guards and a solid post player from last year’s squad, the Lady Bears return several players, who had significant playing time.

Heaven Muenster had several double-doubles last year, and will be expected to carry more of the offensive load, only from a power forward position this year instead of post. Senior Lily Janek will be moving from her forward position to a shooting guard this year, and a great offseason from Sarah Jarzombek cemented her into the post position.

Mady Schroller will also see a change from a forward position to point guard. Juniors Courtney Swize, Kendyl Jaskinia, and Afton Jackson will look to contribute more minutes this year to help replace the guards lost to graduation, with Jaskinia able to play in the post or guard areas.

Junior move-in Morgan Stewbing brings a solid game and will help in the forward/post area along with Grace Burg, who had a great offseason. Libby Landin moves up to varsity for her senior year and will provide some depth for the Lady Bears.

Rounding out the varsity team is guard Isabel Vijil, a junior, and freshman forward Tierney Izworski, who brings both speed and athleticism to the table.

“This should be a fun group to watch,” said Head Coach Kyle Sivadon. “It will be important early on to develop chemistry. We have a lot of players who have experience but will be in different positions this year. Our schedule is very challenging and should prepare us for district play.”

Sivadon also said the Lady Bears are hosting a large tournament that is expected to bring several hundred people into town.

The Lady Bears open the season this Saturday, Nov. 4, hosting Johnson City at 11:30 a.m. in the auditorium gym.

The freshman and junior varsity teams will be opening the season at 10 a.m. -- ninth grade in the practice gym and JV in the varsity gym -- versus Southwest.
