Surprise! School helps with special reunion for Army family
Dustin Stover and his son, Dylan, embrace Oct. 27, after being apart since last January. Dustin is a U.S. Army captain, who deployed to Iraq in January. He returned Oct. 21 and surprised Dylan, a first-grader at La Vernia Primary School, at lunchtime last Friday.

La Vernia Primary School first-grader Dylan Stover got the surprise of his life Oct. 27 as his father, U.S. Army Capt. Dustin Stover, returned home from deployment and joined Dylan for lunch at school.

Dylan’s mom, Shawna, was at Fort Hood Oct. 21 when Dustin flew in from Baghdad, where he’d been serving with the 21st Combat Support Hospital. He deployed this past January, when Dylan was still in kindergarten.

Students cheered and applauded as their classmate was reunited with his dad; they were joined in their welcome by teachers and Dr. Jos Moreno, district superintendent.

Dylan’s teacher, Christine Ballenger, was in on the surprise, which she’d known about for a month and kept secret from her student.

Shawna told the La Vernia News her son had told her Friday morning that he had a feeling his daddy was going to show up for Halloween.

Welcome home, Capt. Stover! We thank you and your family for your service to our country.
