No greater love

“No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” (John 15:13).

And no greater love is what one grandmother gave Sunday in Sutherland Springs, as a shooter opened fire on her and the rest of the congregation in the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs.

Peggy Lynn Warden’s sister, Leisa Stevens Kugler, shared this with the La Vernia News, from her post on Facebook.

“My precious sister, Peggy Lynn, was one of the 26 lives taken by the gunman in Sutherland Springs on Sunday as they worshipped in their tiny church.

“I was blessed to have the kindest person I have ever known as my sister. Her 18-year-old grandson, Zachary Poston, was shot multiple times to both arms, both legs, and abdomen.”

Zachary, a La Vernia High School senior, was taken by air to the San Antonio Military Medical Center, where he had surgery on arrival. He was in surgery again Tuesday.

He faces several more surgeries, Leisa said.

“When he was able to speak,” Leisa said, “he told his mom that my sister died shielding him.”

Leisa spoke with him briefly by phone.

“He told me, ‘She saved my life.’”

“I can say that this last act of her life was indicative of how she lived her entire life,” Leisa wrote. “She was giving, she was strong, and she was adored by so many people whose lives she made better with her honest, selfless love.”

Leisa waited to share this news until she could ask her niece, Zachary’s mother, Jennifer, for her consent. Jennifer is Peggy Lynn’s only child, and the single mother of three boys.

Zachary showed the same courage as his grandmother, according to the GoFundMe account set up to help with medical costs.

“One of the shots fired at Zachary was sustained as he was using his foot to push a little girl under the church pew,” said another great aunt, Korri Stevens. “She was trying to crawl out and Zachary feared if the gunman saw her, he would shoot her.”

Instead, the gunman shot Zachary, shattering his kneecap.

Jennifer has not left Zachary’s side.

“I think they are both remarkably brave,” Leisa said.

“Our faith is strong,” Korri states on the Go Fund Me page for her great nephew. “We have been shaken to the core, but our God is still on the throne and triumphs over evil.”
