Lady Bears outpace Lytle

After a slow start, La Vernia picked up the pace and slowly but surely pulled away from a scrappy Lytle team for a 62-33 win over the Lady Pirates.

Prior to the varsity game, both teams met at half-court for a moment of silence for both schools rocked by tragedy this past week -- La Vernia, with students impacted by the Sutherland Springs shooting and Lytle, which lost a young male student to cancer on Monday.

“This was a great healing moment for both teams who experienced tragic deaths this past weekend,” said La Vernia Head Coach Kyle Sivadon. “It is helpful to know that others share the same pain from different places. I appreciated the Lytle coaching staff for suggesting that we do this.”

The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as the Lady Bears held a slim 12-10 margin going into the second quarter. The lead blossomed a bit going into halftime, as La Vernia’s depth and tempo started to wear on the Lady Pirates. Halftime saw a 26-17 lead.

After getting their wind, Lytle was able to keep the score close most of the third stanza, before an 8-point run by the Lady Bears in the last 2 minutes pushed the lead to 44-29. La Vernia put it out of reach with an 18-4 run to close out the last quarter and the game.

“One strength we have is depth, and [we] are in great shape,” Sivadon said. “That helped us in the second and fourth quarters tonight, as we were able to wear Lytle down. The girls don’t like all the running we have to do in practice, but the coaching staff makes it a goal to try and have the most conditioned team in the state. That allows us to press and play up-tempo all game.”

Heaven Muenster continued her great start to the season with her second double-double in as many games and led the team in scoring, assists, and rebounds with 22, 4 and 13, respectively. The Lady Bears recorded 34 steals this game, with Afton Jackson leading the way with eight, followed by Kendyl Jaskinia with six. Sarah Jarzombek once again had multiple blocks.

The Lady Bears traveled to 5A undefeated Medina Valley Nov. 14 and next week, headed into Thanksgiving, they will travel to take on a very solid and undefeated Salado Nov. 20.
