The La Vernia boys basketball team is out to set the record straight this year, bouncing back from a season-opening loss against Cuero with wins against Karnes City and Seguin -- both of whom emerged victorious against the Bears last year.

La Vernia’s Nov. 21 game against Karnes City was a test of wills, with the Badgers coming within 2 points in the third quarter, before the Bears pulled away for a 62-50 win in the fourth.

Senior Aiden Mulroney led La Vernia with 27 points, with junior Nathan Wiatrek contributing 12; senior Corey Rackler, 9; senior Drew Moczygemba, 7; junior Chris Johnson, 5; and sophomore Nolan Henkes, 2.

The Bears handed out a surprising 51-28 loss to Seguin Nov. 24, to bring La Vernia’s record to 2-1.

High scorers for the Bears were Mulroney and Wiatrek with 11 points each; Moczygemba, 10; Johnson and Rackler, 6 each; junior Dylan Bennett, 5; and senior Spencer Stanush, 2.

La Vernia travels to Jourdanton Nov. 30 through Dec. 2 for a tournament, before taking on the Panthers in Liberty Hill Dec. 5.
