Lady Bear softball team begins new season under new coach

LA VERNIA -- While the season may be over for the La Vernia Lady Bear basketball team, it’s just getting started for the Lady Bear softball players.

Playing under new Head Coach Michelle Uribe, the Lady Bears enter the 2012 season with a new look, but maintain the same goals, and that is to win. The Lady Bear softball team worked hard to build a reputation as one of the best teams in the state, and this year’s squad has no intention of letting that change.

The Lady Bears began their season with a game against the East Central Lady Hornets. The Lady Bears scored first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead, but gave up a trio of runs in the fourth inning, giving the 3-1 win to East Central. Morgan Mikes spent the game on the mound for La Vernia, and Kenzie Conner and Shawna Oehlke each hit triples.

La Vernia took on Poth in the second game of the season, and walked away with a big 12-2 win. The Lady Bears drove in a run in the bottom of the first inning, and then added 7 runs in the third, and 4 more in the bottom of the fourth. Poth scored 2 in the top of the fifth, but it wasn’t enough to keep the game going.

Mikes picked up her first win of the early season, throwing just over 100 pitches during the outing. Conner and Johna Sturm led the Lady Bears at the plate, as seven different Lady Bears accounted for doubles, triples, and RBIs.

The next team La Vernia squared off with was Bandera, and the Lady Bulldogs went down by the score of 9-4. The Lady Bears picked up 2 early runs in the bottom of the first inning, then added 4 more in the third. Bandera drove in 2 runs in the top of the fourth, but La Vernia responded with 3 more runs in the bottom of the inning. Bandera tacked on 2 more in the top of the fifth, but the game ended with La Vernia as the victor.

Conner, Sturm, and Sage Martinez once again had the big sticks for the Lady Bears, and Morgan Mikes helped her own cause with an RBI. Taylor Ford had a pair of RBIs for La Vernia, and Sturm snatched a base.

With a 2-1 record, the Lady Bears traveled to New Braunfels to face Canyon. The Lady Bears scored in the top of the first inning, and held Canyon through four innings, but gave up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to forfeit the lead. The Lady Bears had one final at-bat to close the gap, but were unable to make the comeback.

Martinez led the team at the plate, and Mikes threw a good game, though she was unable to pick up the win. The loss dropped the Lady Bears to 2-2 on the year, but there is still a lot of softball to be played before the district season is set to begin.
