Bears welcome Canyon Lake Thursday night

 

The La Vernia Bear basketball team had an easy victory over Nixon-Smiley last week, before a tough run in the Dec. 15-16 Somerset tournament.

The Bears cruised to a 63-28 victory over the Mustangs Dec. 12. Seniors led the offense, with Corey Rackler sinking 13 points, Spencer Stanush right behind with 12, and Aiden Mulroney with 10 points. Junior Chris Johnson grabbed seven rebounds, while junior Dylan Bennett got five; Stanush, Mulroney, and junior Nick Schrader had four each.

La Vernia started the Somerset tournament with a 74-67 loss to Harlandale, but went on to win against Carrizo Springs, 80-65. The following day held two defeats for the Bears, beginning with a close 65-63 loss to Fredericksburg, and then a 69-52 loss to Somerset.

Mulroney led the La Vernia offense with 86 points for the tournament, with Rackler getting 84 and Johnson, 30.

On defense, Mulroney had 28 rebounds; Johnson, 17; Schrader, 12; and Rackler, 11. Rackler also made seven steals; Johnson, 6; Mulroney, 5; and Schrader, 4.
