Holiday eating, the new year, U.S. leadership

“Holiday Eating Tips: Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Holiday spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.”

Between the Lines

While this message was obviously in jest, it nevertheless holds some truth. All the holiday foods seem to be diet-breakingly rich -- but oh-so-good! And the holidays are not over for at least another week when we will have to go back to reality: Eating healthy and doing our exercises.

If we are honest, though, we will admit that we really enjoyed breaking all the diet rules, and indulging in all the “free food!”

As for the carrot sticks, they are probably acceptable as long as you include a generous portion of ranch dressing on the side, and the mashed potatoes are especially good with extra butter, heavy cream, and a little cream cheese added for good measure.

Next week (next year), we will talk about exercising.

“Jeff Flake: Some GOP rallies look like ‘spasms of a dying party’”

Between the Lines

Not sure how much credence to give to anything Sen. Flake says. He is on his way out, having announced his retirement. He has long been a McCain Republican on the opposite side of all things conservative.

Naturally then, Flake is the darling of the talk shows because he likes to criticize conservatives for “lacking diversity” and harboring “anger and resentment.” As far as I’m concerned, he is a flake, and I just read that he was born in Snowflake, Arizona! He needs to go back home and leave the real Republicans to do the work they were elected to do.

“Indeed, it is a Merry Christmas for Americans of all races, creeds and genders and species and political persuasions -- so long as they are legal Americans who work for a living and pay taxes.”

Between the Lines

That is an interesting perspective. Being legal seems to be a problem. I think it’s time for “Aunt Nancy” Pelosi to join the jovial “Uncle Joe” Biden in retirement.

She has called the recently passed tax reform bill the “worst bill in the history of the United States Congress.” This, despite the fact that the stock market is having a field day. The economy appears to be riding high and the market is booming.

“Pope Francis has used his traditional Christmas Day message to call for ‘peace for Jerusalem’ and dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians.”

Between the Lines

We all have to agree with the wishes for peace in Jerusalem and improved relations between the Israelis and Palestinians. Unfortunately, there has been much unfavorable rhetoric written in the media since the president said that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

This, however, is something that past presidents Bush 43, Clinton, and Obama all have said, but they did not have the gumption to follow through with the pledge.

President Donald Trump, true to his promises, has followed the rhetoric with action and it has shocked the world. Action coming from a politican is something the world is not accustomed to seeing.

Let the rest of the world complain, but the United States now has a leader who leads. Get used to it.
