The La Vernia Bears had one final basketball game Dec. 21 before Christmas break, beating out Canyon Lake 69-56.

That evening, the Bears put on a great display of ball handling, 3-point shooting, free throws, and flying through the air with the greatest of ease.

The Canyon Lake team hung close for a while. At the end of the first quarter, they were tied at 15-15. But that was as close as they could get to taking the lead.

By halftime, the Bears were out front, but only by 5, 35-30. Senior Aiden Mulroney had the hot hand with 20 points at the half, with senior Corey Rackler adding 9 points.

The Bears widened the margin in the third quarter to 50-43, and as the final buzzer sounded, the Bears had won by 13. It was a great night for La Vernia.

Mulroney led his team with 32 points, with Rackler adding 21 points; junior Chris Johnson, 7; junior Joseph Cortez, 5; and senior Drew Moczygemba, 4.

Mulroney also grabbed seven rebounds, with Johnson getting six; Rackler, five; junior Nick Schrader, 4; junior Nathan Wiatrek, two; and Moczygemba and sophomore Nolan Henkes each getting one. Johnson had six steals on the night, and Mulroney had two.

La Vernia (11-7) welcomes the Pleasanton Eagles Dec. 29.
