Bears soccer takes second
La Vernia senior Hunter Skrzycki passes the ball down the line during the Jan. 4-6 Edgewood Tournament, where the Bears took second place.

The La Vernia Boys soccer team came home with the second-place trophy from the Jan. 4-6 Edgewood Tournament.

Southside set a quick game pace, but a strong defense from the Bears kept the Cardinals from scoring a goal, until an error on an indirect kick saw the ball in the back of the net. The free kick was given to the Cardinals in the first half at the top of La Vernia’s box. While the wall was being set and the goalie was distracted, two Cardinals played the ball and put it in the goal.

Brian Beltran had 10 goals during the tournament, and Eduardo “Yayo” Cruz had six assists. Bryce Crane had three shutouts.

“I am very happy and impressed with our play on the pitch and especially how we played against a top-ranking team,” said La Vernia Head Coach Jose Carranza.

The La Vernia Bears took on Harlan Jan. 9 at home, and travel to Pleasanton Jan. 12 for a tournament.
