LVISD: No new information on alleged sexual assaults
La Vernia Independent School District interim Superintendent Gary Patterson

“The Rangers will provide updates to the district as they deem appropriate and on their own timeline. As of this time, we have not received any additional information from the Rangers.”

That was La Vernia Independent School District interim Superintendent Gary Patterson’s response to a question from the La Vernia News about the Texas Rangers’ investigation into alleged incidents of sexual assault among La Vernia High School student athletes.

Allegations, which came to light 10 months ago, resulted in the arrest of 13 students. No new information has become available in recent weeks.

Patterson, who was appointed interim superintendent Nov. 29 by district trustees, has promised to share information as soon as the district receives it.

The school district’s legal counsel issued a statement after a lawsuit was filed Nov. 21 in federal court against the school district.

The suit, filed on behalf of one student who claims to have been attacked, alleges that a teacher and a coach knew about the alleged assault, but that neither reported the incident to law enforcement authorities within 48 hours, as required by law.

The counsel said the district had no evidence that any employee was aware of alleged hazing or harassment until it was reported to law enforcement.

Patterson said neither the district nor its legal counsel would have any additional comments on the suit because it is “pending litigation.”

At the school board’s Jan. 9 meeting, district trustees didn’t discuss the suit or related legal matters, either in open session or in closed session.

Trustees’ actions during the brief meeting included:

• Conducting a public hearing on the state’s financial accountability rating system and the district’s Superior Achievement rating

• Authorizing Patterson to serve as a district representative for the First Public Lone Star Investment Pool, which helps to manage district funds

• Affirming Helen Hubert’s appointment as the intermediate school’s principal, replacing Scott Cales.
