Bears outclass Eastside Memorial
Junior Bear Kaleb Collins (10) pulls back to look for a layup during a home game against Eastside Memorial. La Vernia heads to Wimberley this Friday.

The La Vernia Bear basketball team took on Eastside Memorial Jan. 17, defeating the Panthers, 87-70.

Right from the tip-off, the Bears were on a roll. As the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter, it was looking like a shutout with a 24-7 score on the board.

The second quarter saw the Eastside team settle down and play much better. La Vernia continued to hustle, however, and the inside lane to the basket looked like it was owned by senior Bear Aiden Mulroney. An aggressive approach by the Panthers allowed La Vernia to take advantage of some free throws, but Eastside still managed to outscore the Bears. The score at halftime was still in La Vernia’s favor, 45-33.

The Bears were again taking advantage of the charity line in the second half. Despite some 3-pointers by the Panthers, they still trailed, 65-52.

The Eastside Memorial defense began closing down on the Bears in the final quarter, but still couldn’t keep out Mulroney. The game ended with a La Vernia victory, 87-70.

Mulroney led the Bears with 26 points, while senior Corey Rackler added another 23 points, dropping 12 of his 16 free throws. Nolan Henkes had 13 points; Nick Schrader, 9; Nathan Wiatrek, 8; Walker Reinhard, 5; Kaleb Collins, 2; and Chris Johnson, 1.

Mulroney grabbed 13 rebounds for the defense, and Wiatrek had three steals.

La Vernia (15-10, 2-1) dropped its Jan. 19 game against Navarro, 58-45. They hosted Veterans Memorial Jan. 23, and head to Wimberley this Friday to take on the Texans.
