Peace in the valley for me

February has arrived. Of course, by now, most of us will have completely blown any New Year’s resolution. ...

Some people will not even remember what their resolution was. I know I have periods when I cannot recall anything. Unexplainably, I had one of those times again just the other day. ...

You may recall wanting to lose weight, stop smoking, giving up calories, swearing off swearing, avoiding fat grams, giving up drinking, breathing only clean air, establishing world peace, whip inflation now, or effect some other worthwhile life change.

Some of us may have had the best of intentions, but now, for convenience sake, we are using that new treadmill, elliptical, or Bowflex as a convenient place to hang clothes or blankets. ...

Now, I in no way want to add guilt or shame to anyone’s lack of self-discipline. ...For all I know, you may not be experiencing either, and you’re not about to allow me to even bring it up. I am only mentioning such things as a way to transition into gaining your attention away from that thing you said you were going to do, but haven’t done, and that you feel no regret for failing to keep, without upsetting you that I brought it up.

Even now, as I write this, a saying comes to mind from my clinical training days: “If you always think what you always thought, then you’ll always do what you always did, and you will always be what you always were.” But I am weighted down with digression.

As a matter of fact, the missus was talking the other day. Many times, she’s done this without any provocation from me. I have actually heard her doing it. Not that I listen particularly or pay any mind to her when she does it, but on this occasion I was within her reach. ...

All of a sudden, she said something that made my ears perk up and my attention zero in on her every word. It isn’t so much the way she said it, but it’s what she said. I actually held onto her every word.

In fact, I believe it is one of her New Year’s resolutions that I am hoping she will keep. Honestly, I am not sure exactly what got her to say it, but I am quoting her here: “I don’t know why I even talk to you! I’m not going to say another word!”

I started smiling and singing an old hymn, “There will be peace in the valley for me -- .” That was a couple of days ago. Strange, it was about that very moment when I experienced another one of those unexplainable blackouts.
