Bears fall to Liberty Hill in area championship

LA VERNIA -- They made a good run, but following a second-round playoff loss to Liberty Hill, the basketball season has come to an end for the La Vernia Bears.

After making a good district run, the Bears qualified for the playoffs out of District 28-3A as the No. 2 seed. The team was paired with Carrizo Springs in the bi-district round of competition, and the two teams traveled to Southside High School to battle it out. Each team played good defense, and both struggled at times to find their marks. In the end, however, it was the Bears who walked away with a solid 45-36 win.

The victory moved La Vernia into the area championship, where the team was to meet Liberty Hill, the District 25-3A champions.

The teams met in Wimberley, and the Bears gave it everything they had. Liberty Hill jumped out to a 15-7 lead after the first period of play, however, and led 33-18 at the break.

The Bears were completely outgunned in the third period, allowing Liberty Hill to tack on another 27 points. At the same time, the Bears were only able to manage 8 points. The team got rolling in the final period with 17 points, but Liberty Hill matched their efforts, and locked up the area championship with a 77-43 win over La Vernia.

Colby Simms led the Bear scoring effort with 13 points in the game, followed by Austin Pickens and Thomas Burris with 10 points each. Kenny Moehrig scored 7 for La Vernia, Bryan Escamilla scored 2, and Aaron Grubb scored 1 point from the free-throw line.

The Bears end their season with an overall record of 20-10, and were 10-2 through district play. The team will lose several players to graduation, but will also return a number of players to the team to help compete for a district title next season.
