LA VERNIA The hard economic times did not disrupt the success of the La Vernia Junior Livestock & Poultry Auction and Baked Foods show. This year’s sale total was estimated at $310,000.00 an increase of more than $60,000 from last year.

Earning grand champion titles for their animals exhibited March 1-2, include Zachary Balcar, rabbit; Bo Garcia, lamb (repeat winner from last year); Catrice James, turkey; Dalton Schwarz, broilers; Valerie Swygard, goat (also a repeat winner from 2011); Brock Gerlich, hog; and Kristen Klein, steer, earning the grand champion title for three years.

Winning the reserve champion banners include, Triston Summy, rabbit; Clayton Matney, lamb; Emily Ramzinski, turkey; Samantha Kravitz, broilers; Colton Bennett, goat; Chesney Halsey, steer; and Kayla Gladstone, hog.

All the grand and reserve champion exhibitors received $2,000 and more for their champion animals.

Champions in the swine breeding show included, Cross division - Kimberly Jacob; Duroc - Trace Venske; and Yorkshire - Megan Johnson. Reserve Breed Champion exhibitors were, Cross, Desirae Sodrok’s Duroc took the reserve champion title in the breeding show, while Kyler Puhlmann and Marisella Ramirez swine entries earned the reserve champion titles in Duroc and Yorkshire classes, respectively.

In the steer champion drive, Katy Sells was awarded the breed champion rosette for the exotic steer shown, while Theodore Popham earned the reserve breed champion honors.

Opening the March 3 auction, showmanship winners were announced as follows. Winners include for the junior division, Bo Garcia, lambs; Hunter Skrzycki, goats; Chesney Halsey, steers; Emma Kotzur, heifers; Trace Venske, swine; and Emma Weber, rabbits.

Senior showmanship winners include, Morgan Burns, lambs; Valerie Swygard, goats; Kristen Klein, steers; Leighton Robbins, heifers; Shaley Trammell, swine; and Claire Weber, rabbits.

Baked foods show, crafts

Exhibitors exhibited their baking skills and creativity March 1.

Carllie Allen earned the overall grand champion craft honors for a La Vernia Monopoly type game that she created and entered in the junior miscellaneous division.

Reserve champion went to Logan Recker with a woodwork project a curio display case.

Best of Show went to Kaylin Bratz for an iced cake in the senior division, marking her first champion win. Another first time champion was Kait Steele who won in the junior division with an un-iced cake. Both students will receive microwave ovens from Hoelscher’s Furniture in Floresville as part of their prize winnings.

The 2012 baked food and craft auction also exceeded last year’s total, with six additional items up for sale. The 38 items sold during the auction for a total of $11,850.

Thanks go out to those businesses, grandparents, and loyal supporters who helped each receive get a good bid.

Auctioneer Joey Tomlinson did another tremendous job March 3, with the sale continuing well into the evening. Larry Bauer assisted Tomlinson with closing out the auction sale.
