That’s what the folks at the Sam Fore Jr. Wilson County Public Library call the newest innovation in book-lending technology. This is a vending machine for books -- think of it as a “RedBox” for books -- located at Lifechek Drug in La Vernia. It is the first machine of its type in Texas! Only California and Florida have these, so Texas is third in the nation to have this machine.
Library card-holding members can enter their library card number and check out a book at no charge for up to two weeks. They may then return that book in the return box located next to the kiosk. Library Events Coordinator Sheri Mantei stated that she selected the most current and sought-after titles to put in the vending machine, which also features audio books along with hardback and paperback titles.
Mantei was stationed at Lifechek Drug March 22 to help acquaint customers with “Laverne.” If you don’t have a current library card or have lost your old card, the charge is $5 to get a new one so you can use the vending machine. The library can also do intra-library loans through the San Antonio library system. If you don’t find the book you want, call the Wilson County Public Library at 830-393-7361.
