Motorist strikes, kills loose horse

NEW BERLIN A La Vernia man is recovering from multiple injuries, including lacerations to the head, after officials said his vehicle struck a loose horse on F.M. 775 north of here. Fog conditions might have contributed to the crash, said Chief Kurt Strey of the New Berlin Volunteer Fire Department.

According to Trooper Deon Cockrell with the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Partol, Jeffery Heubaum, 27, was traveling north on F.M. 775 in a 2004 Honda Civic at approximately 3:40 a.m. when the incident occurred. Strey said the impact was so severe, the roof was sheared from the vehicle and the horse was killed.

Strey said Heubaum allegedly called a relative to transport him to the hospital and the two left the scene.

Heubaum’s condition worsened as the two were traveling on I-10, leading them to call 911. He was transported by ambulance to Guadalupe Regional Medical Center in Seguin, Strey said, but later transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. A hospital spokesman said Jan. 18 Heubaum was listed in stable condition.

Strey reminds motorists to drive slower in foggy conditions and other inclement weather. He also reminds motorists to dial 911 when injured in an accident; not doing so puts victims at risk of further injury.
