‘I can do all things through Christ’

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phillipians 4:13 is a very popular Bible verse. Children memorize it and adults quote it when faced with difficult tasks. It is easy to encourage ourselves with this verse when the going gets rough. We think that by simply quoting it we are going to get the strength needed to succeed and get us through the day.

In the Bible Paul faced many situations. He knew what it was to live comfortably and what it was to live in need. He knew how it felt when things went right and when things went wrong. In the natural, we might think that his life was a roller coaster with its ups and downs. Many can relate to that. It is hard when our life is full of ups and downs and sometimes more downs than ups. Through all his situations, Paul decided to focus on Jesus and see the ups and downs from a different point of view.

Paul decided that with Jesus there was a happy medium to life. With Jesus he would be just as happy in comfort or discomfort. He also knew that Jesus would be there when things were right and when they went wrong. Situations were not going to be an emotional roller coaster. He took control of the situation knowing that his trust and confidence were in Jesus.

We can all learn from this lesson. Many times our lives are like roller coasters. We are tossed here and there emotionally. The next time you feel emotionally overwhelmed, remember that through the good and the bad God is with us. Don’t let situations take control of your life. Control them by putting your eyes on Jesus; not the situation. Remember “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.”
