Meet the 2012 Miss La Vernia Scholarship  Pageant  contestants

The 2012 Miss La Vernia Scholarship Pageant will be held Friday, May 11, at 7 p.m. in the La Vernia High School Auditorium at 225 Bluebonnet Road.

The La Vernia Lions Club sponsors the scholarship pageant each year for deserving young ladies in the area. Beyond talent and beauty, the Miss La Vernia Scholarship Pageant represents the ideals of the community encouraging healthy living, self-confidence, creative accomplishment, community service, and the pursuit of scholastic achievement among young ladies. The first official event of Miss La Vernia 2012 is her debut with her court at the 34th annual La Vernia Lions Bluebonnet Fest Parade on Saturday, May 19.

Xanthe Harston

Xanthe, 17, is a junior at La Vernia High School. The daughter of Jeffery and DeAdra Harston is sponsored by Lenz Design and Remodeling.

She participates in varsity cross country and varsity track and field and was a regional qualifier in track. Xanthe is a member of the school’s wind ensemble band, playing clarinet; she competed at state. She is a member of the Technology committee.

Her community interests include volunteering at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to participate in a graffiti wipe-out, Youth Camp leader for Church of Latter-day Saints 2009-11, Sunday school president. Working with the youth conference, she helped clean and refurbish the Boy Scouts of America McGimsey Camp, cleared and cleaned Austin Cemetery, volunteered at Villages of West Creek in San Antonio, was the Easter Bunny at the annual Easter Picnic, helped at the annual Fall Festival, and was a Christmas elf in the annual Snack With Santa.

Jennifer Skrzycki

La Vernia High School sophomore Jennifer Skrzycki, 16, is the daughter of Gary and Julie Skrzycki; her sponsor is Triple W Custom Homes.

Jennifer has played junior varsity and freshman basketball, is a student athletic trainer, and participates in FFA on the Poultry Judging Team and Junior Chapter Conducting Team. She was a member of the color guard as a freshman.

Her 4-H activities include being a member of Bluebonnet 4-H Club, where she has served as club president and county council delegate. She has competed at 4-H State Round-Up in Poultry Judging, where she earned first place Senior Team, and third high individual. Jennifer has shown animals in the Bluebonnet 4-H Prospect Show (meat goat), Medina County Fair (meat goat), Wilson County Junior Livestock Show (breeding billy goat and breeding nanny goat), San Antonio Stock Show (turkey and meat goat), La Vernia Junior Livestock Show (turkey, meat goat, breeding nanny), Houston Stock Show (turkey), and Star of Texas show in Austin (turkey and meat goat).

Other activities include Youth Connections (San Antonio Stock Show), Youth Day (San Antonio Stock Show), One Day 4-H, La Vernia Senior Citizen Thanksgiving Meal, St. Ann Catholic Church festival, greeter at St. Ann Catholic Church, MS150, Chamber of Commerce Hall fund-raiser, set up for Wilson County Junior Livestock Show, and set up and clean up for the La Vernia Junior Livestock Show and the Bluebonnet 4-H Prospect Show.

Kayla Dawn Gladstone

Kayla Dawn Gladstone, 14, is a freshman at La Vernia High School. Her parents are Daryl and Misty Kowalik. She is sponsored by Embroidery Plus and Kowalik’s Construction.

Kayla participates in La Vernia FFA Poultry Judging and Chapter Conducting, and is a member of the Honey Bears Dance Team.

Her other activities include membership in the County Line 4-H, where she has earned Reserve Grand Champion honors in 2010 and 2012 with her projects.

In addition to school and 4-H events, she has participated in youth day at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and trash pick-up with her 4-H Club.

Sarah Wright

La Vernia High School junior Sarah Wright is the 17-year-old daughter of Ronnie Wright and Christa Lindsey. Her sponsor is The Texas Real Estate Team.

She is the president of Bears Care, and a major on the Honey Bears Dance Team, and is a member of the Art Club and the Nobles Council. Sarah has been a VASE contestant, Western Art contestant, achieved Western Art Top 50 status, and earned a Western Art Scholarship. She was the Freshman Class Homecoming Duchess and Junior Homecoming Duchess, and was nominated for Junior Prom Princess.

Her community activities and interests include being 2011 Miss La Vernia First Runner-up, proudly serving on the court and helping the community with a multitude of functions, including the La Vernia Food Pantry, parades, auctions, the La Vernia Wild West HammerFest, La Vernia Music Festival, and the Bluebonnet Fest. Sarah is a proud member of the Dream Believe Know It Foundation, is currently involved in the second annual anti-bullying campaign, works with Make-A-Wish Foundation--New York Chapter, and fights against bullying. She has given more than 100 hours of community service during the summer in New York with Dream Believe Know It, provides a home for abandoned animals, and has participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. She is a member of Stand True which combats abortion, has participated in Teens in the Driver Seat, and competed in numerous talent/modeling competitions, and National American Miss.

Anzlie Lowak

Anzlie Lowak, 17, is a junior at La Vernia High School. Sponsored by the Learning Enhancement Center, she is the daughter of Timothy and Marguerite Lowak.

Her school activities include membership in the National Honor Society and Student Council, newspaper editor, and Journalism UIL participant, where she advanced to regional competition twice and placed each time.

A dance team member for two years, Anzlie is in the top 6 percent of her class.

Her community involvement and interests include volunteering at the Three Oaks 4-H Turkey Dinner, where she has prepared mashed potatoes since the age of 7. She has organized and put on a general item drive for Bastrop fire relief (sponsored by student council), volunteered at numerous school sporting events working the concession stand, and helped at the 2010 and 2011 Robotics Convention in San Antonio.

Anzlie has competed in the Wilson County News Springtime in South Texas Photo Contest for the past two years; she placed second and third in the student category.

She ran for Miss Smile of San Antonio 2009-10, and received third place, and participated in the Fiesta River Parade.

Anzlie plans to attend the University of Texas at Austin.

Destiney Renae Barnhardt

Destiney Renae Barnhardt is the 17-year-old daughter of Dennis and Rebecca Barnhardt.

The La Vernia High School sophomore is sponsored by Los Compadres Mexican Restaurant.

The ninth grade Collegiate went to state, is a member of the La Vernia Mighty Bear Band Color Guard, FCA, and cross country and track and field teams.

She is a member of the Youth Group at Hope Church and helps at the La Vernia Primary School and the La Vernia United Methodist Church.
